Cooking outdoors is what we love. We have built a permanent fire pit area at our house, but there are a few grills I still use. Whether it be portability, efficiency I still have manufactured cookers in my arsenal. One of them being The Pit Barrel Cooker. A few years ago, when I was renting, I had the dream of building my own UDS. After researching online, drawing up plans, and searching for a food grade drum to use, I tripped over this beauty. The cost was reasonable, and it was already complete and the company is a supporter of Veterans. Since I have served, this made me more interested. I read a few reviews, and was impressed on how efficient it claimed to be. Living overseas, on a small island, firewood is scarce and costly. I decided to go ahead and try it out.
All I can say is it does what it claimed. After filling the coal basket, it takes around 30-40 mins to get to the ambient temp I like, and retains the heat for around 8 hours before having to tend the fire. I throw 2 small chunks of wood in and all the smoky flavor I need is there.
It is lightweight, portable, comes with components to set it up for different styles of cooking. There is a grill grate. Bars, and meat hooks for hanging. I have used this to cook pulled pork, chicken, ribs, mac&cheese, baked potatoes. What you can do with this product is only limited by your imagination.
